ERTS and ICD’s (Inland Clearance Depot)
are warehouses/depots which are approved by HM Customs and Excise
to which goods imported in containers/vehicles may be removed
for entry, examination and clearance.
These locations are popular with groupage consolidators ( companies
which specialise in grouping together shipments from various
suppliers and receivers ) as it allows the full container to
be removed from the main dockyard area and unloaded prior to
individual customs clearances being gained.
The containers will move from the quay to the warehouses under
customs bond.
Usually the shed operator will create a manifest of the separate
consignments in the container which then allows each consignee’s
agent to prepare the necessary clearance paperwork, the benefit
of this is that you can clear your own consignment without having
to wait for everyone else in the container to clear their cargo
which used to be the case before ERTS/ICD’s existed.
